Bless my baby girl Amy Yang, I love & miss you so much <3
On Dec 5, 1995 Amy Yang was born into this world with a congenital heart defect. During a regular physical exam in the summer of 2011, an irregular heart beat was detected. She was referred to the Children’s Hospital where later that Fall, they gave us her diagnosis: Ebstein Anomaly. She had blood regurgitation between the Right Atrial and the Right Ventricular heart chambers because the tricuspid valve (between these chambers) in her heart was malformed and abnormal. The right side of her heart was enlarged, weakened, and holding twice the amount of blood that it was suppose to. We were informed that Amy was going to need open-heart surgery before the end of the year.
At 6am on December 12, 2011 Amy checked in at Children’s Hospital in South Minneapolis for her surgery to repair this leaky valve in hopes it would reduce the size of her right ventricle. The surgery though took 4 hours longer than expected and the surgeon wasn’t quite satisfied with the results.  She still had mild to moderate blood leakage in her heart but Amy tolerated the surgery well. We received news she would heal fast and have no ill-effects at all.  Within an hour of coming out of surgery, she was communicating with her family by way of writing. Drowsy and still medicated, the first thing she asked for was (of course) her Ipad, then subsequently her family.
Once released from doctor’s care, Amy was determined to not let the surgery stop her from living her life the same way before the surgery. She pushed herself to return to school full-time within weeks, much sooner than the doctor anticipated. She managed to catch up in all of her classes, still making the B Honor Roll that trimester; the first time she wasn’t on the A Honor Roll since middle school! She even registered for Post Secondary Education (PSEO) at North Hennepin Community College during her next year in High School! The second month post operation, she took Driver’s Ed class after school and got her permit in February 2012. She was determined to get her license before school started this fall so she could drive herself to PSEO. The first week of March 2012, Amy expressed interest in applying to the Junior Entrepreneurs of MN internship at the Carlson School of Business. This program intends to teach youths the basics of entrepreneurship and leadership. She was still pondering about what to write for the required essay portion.
***********************************************
Amy unexpectedly collapsed the evening of March 12, 2012. She was at Teen Night at church; the first time she decided to attend church activities after the surgery. After playing a small activity, she sat down on the floor awkwardly. Within seconds, she collapsed. (Diagosed as cardiac arrest). Within minutes, she no longer had a heartbeat and struggled breathing. Paramedics arrived shortly after, shocked her, and then was quickly brought back to Children’s Hospital in South Minneapolis where they operated on her in the Emergency Room. Amy was then sent into ICU. This unfortunate episode brought great trauma to all of her vital organs and the doctors prepared us for the worst. She is currently in the hospital under very critical conditions.
Throughout Amy’s experience, she always had a smile on her face. From the date of her diagnosis Amy has kept her spirits high and her faith stronger. Unfortunately, Amy has a long journey in front of her. She will be transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where she will await a heart transplant operation. She is currently at the top of the donor list, though it could be anywhere from a few days to a few months before a compatible heart becomes available. After heart surgery and being released from the hospital Amy will have to stay in the vicinity for a minimum of 3 months and be subject to over 20 pills a day as she adapts to a new lifestyle.
Please support the donation efforts if possible but most importantly, keep her in your prayers.
